Title: Strange Neighbours? or Not?
Keywords: contrast, harmony, placemaking
Description: The brutalist architecture of hard and grey concrete makes “strange neighbors” of the playful entertainment around it. While there are attempts to make the structure more friendly to its function, we saw that these measures are mostly temporary and add-on. Hence, this piece explores whether permanently modifying brutalist structures themselves, by bringing colors to its monochrome surface, would bring about a more harmonious landscape design. Or in reality, the gloomy design of these brutalist buildings, by providing a contrast and bring prominence to the joyful atmosphere, make the experience of the place more stimulating and interesting. Thus, this piece is our first step in exploring whether proximity of what we perceive as “strange neighbours” enhance or diminish experience of a place.
